This is a nice ornate working waffle iron. The stamped tag on the bottom indicates this waffle iron was patented (patent # 1694981) in 1928 (submitted in 1926) by Charles P. Randolph. He assigned it to the Edison Electric Appliance Company of Chicago, A Corporation of New York. It was produced by Hotpoint CALROD of Edison Electric Appliance Co. The CALROD designation refers to the heating elements that are an integral part of the aluminum heating surface which are proven workhorses if somewhat slow to heat. These were developed by Earl Richardson for irons under the name Pacific Electric Heating Company which later became Edison Electric Appliance Co. sometime in the late teens.
This waffle iron is model 147Y158 and is in fine condition and works. It has an engraved spiral design on the raised top with a stylized sun or flower in the center. There is a similar design all around the outer edge. The top has a wooden handle that shows only a little wear.
The bottom drip catcher also has a nice scallop design on the outside edge with 2 opposing Bakelite handles which are in excellent condition. There is some minimal wear and pitting in the drip edge. The bottom rests on 5 fiber feet, also in excellent condition, to thermally isolate the unit from the surface.
The power cord appears to be original and has the GE logo molded in the plug. The cord is supple and has no fraying of the cloth.
A finer example of an Edison GE waffle iron will be hard to find.
