17th Century Copperplate Engraving - Emanuel Sweert
Antiques : Art
This is an original, hand colored, copperplate engraving from Emanuel Sweert’s: Florilegium Amplissimum et Selectissimum. It was drawn by Sweert (who based many of his plates on the work of Dr. Theodore de Bry) and published by Kempner in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, in 1612. This print is a page from a sales catalog for plants and bulbs from Sweert's gardens, to be sold at fairs in Frankfurt and Amsterdam in 1612. At the time, Sweert was prefect of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II, and a dealer in newly discovered, rare and exotic plants from around the world. Interesting how little things have changed over nearly 400 years . . . the spring of the year brings flower and bulb catalogs even today. This print – Page 59 - measures 11” X 16” with a platemark of 8.25” X 13”. It is in generally very good condition with age toning and smudging consistent with its age (see all photos for condition). The print is in an acid-free environment and shrink wrapped for protection. The shrink wrap may cause some glare in the photos. Please email questions; additional pictures are available on request.
