This large folio, hand colored print – ADAMI POMUM – Plate 313 – is from Giovanni Battista Ferrari's pioneering work, Hesperides Sive de Malorum, the first book ever published to be devoted exclusively to citrus fruit. Published Rome, 1646. The fruit plates were drawn and engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert, who apprenticed under Crispin de Passe and became one of the great 17th-century botanical artists. Ferrari's book is generally considered to be one of the world's finest and most sumptuous baroque works. This particular piece, after the original, probably dates to the early 20th century and was produced by the Florentine printer Edizioni Ponte Vecchio. The decorative, hand colored print measures 15” X 22” with a well struck platemark at 9.75” X 13.5”. It is in an acid-free environment and shrink wrapped for protection. The shrink wrap may have caused some glare in the photos. Please email questions. Additional pictures are available on request.
