Such is the aura that this unusual Gothic-style heart and crescents demi by Elsa Schiaparelli exudes.

This demi's heart brooch is not the usual red, but black. The matching earrings are shaped like bright crescent moons, but are just as dark.

Happily for us, all the blackness comes with flashes of light via the iridescent stones and a smattering of off-white faux pearls. Altogether, these translate to a fantastic presentation!

Schiaparelli, more than any costume jewelry designer of the 20th century, is known for flamboyance. Her pieces are outré, influenced by a surrealist philosophy and artist friends like surrealist icon Salvador Dali. This demi seems to show this streak in all its glory.

All the pieces are set in dark gunmetal gray, and are mostly encrusted with dark faux gemstones: faux onyx black rhinestones and "black diamond" vitrail rhinestones.

The vitrail stones flash rainbow colors under the light. So do a smattering of faux off-white pearls accents.

As in most Schiaparellis, substantial in size. The heart brooch is 2 1/4" x 2 1/2", and the earrings are 1 3/4" x 1".

The brooch has a surrealist-style backing, with undulating, textured lines. It has a locking c-clasp closure. The earrings are clipbacks.

All pieces are signed Schiaparelli in script. The set in in excellent condition, with little wear everywhere.
