The Case ( see Berg 1-53) , Melainotypes, (early heavy tintype) Brass mats & Retainers are AUTHENTIC & ORIGINAL.

The Thermo Plastic Union case, also referred to as Gutta Percha, was made by A.P. Critchlow & Co. of CT and MA. They were in business between 1853 and 1857 before selling out to Littlefield, Parsons & Co. The incomplete label, torn in half years ago (my guess) states the hinge patent date as Oct 14 1856 and again the following year. The full text is available on perfect labels.

Nicer than my photos!!! Lighter & better details.... the 2 Civil War Era Melainotypes are a matched pair showing a young husband & wife. Both are impressed at the bottom with "Neff's Melainotype Pat. 19 Feb 56". These early tintypes were much heavier or thicker than the ones that followed their short life span between 1856 - 1860. The young man's eyes & bowtie are tinted blue, his cheeks and part of his floral vest are tinted a soft red. His young wife also has rouged cheeks with all her jewelry picked out in gold. Both images were taken at the same time, both have identical brass mats and are stamped "Holmes Booth & Haydyns, Patent applied for". Both retainers are also matching. Condition of all is excellent. There are some lines on the left of the lady, all else is fine.

The case is in very good condition with 2 minor hairline cracks and some nibbles to the edges as shown in my combination photograph.
