Wedgwood Queens Ware University of Pennsylvania Plate 1940

One of a set of twelve dinner plates made in 1940 for the 200th anniversary of the founding of the University of Pennsylvania, this plate features a red transfer print of the entrance to Penn's dental school, which was the first dental school in the country.

The Wedgwood plate is Queensware (creamware) and has an embossed border border of laurel leaves with a profile portrait of Franklin at the top and the school seal at the bottom.

The center illustration, titled "The Evans institute Portal" was rendered by Douglas D Ellington ('12) who was a well-known professor of architecture.

The plate is 10.25" in diameter.

condition is near mint: there are three or four scratches to the surface of the plate and the back is crazed. Otherwise fine.

Marked with the usual Wedgwood marks and dated 1940.
