These pieces were made by APOLLO STUDIOS of NEW YORK, a division of Bernard Rice & Sons, and were made between 1909 and 1922. This company was a contemporary of Tiffany Studios. Their items were offered for sale in the prestigious Ovington's on Fifth Avenue in New York. Ovington's sold china, crystal, fine art, silver and hand painted portraits on ivory, among other things.

This set includes the hand mirror, hair brush, comb, covered box (perhaps a hair receiver), an atomizer perfume, and a covered box with compartments. With the exception of the comb, all of the pieces are marked APOLLO STUDIOS, N.Y. Some also indicate they were made in the U.S.A.

The set is gold tone and probably was gold plated, as apparently this company did. They features enameled borders with painted details in ruby red, dark blue, and green. The design is elaborate and detailed and very reminiscent of the period. It has an "Old World" styling with which I am personally enamored.

My favorite piece is the atomizer/perfume. It is 7" tall and measures 2 1/2" across the base.

The covered box has a glass liner that can be removed. It measures 3 3/4" tall including the knob, by 3 3/4" across the bottom.

The mirror is in very good condition with a beveled mirror and no silver loss to it. It measures 15 1/2" long and is 4" wide at the widest.

The matching hairbrush is 10 3/4" long and 3" wide at the widest.

The comb appears to be tortoise -- it at least has the tortoise look. It has an embellished gold frame across the top which can be removed. There are a few teeth that have broken and this is the only piece that is not in tip-top condition. One could watch for a comb to replace this one, but frankly the damage is not a huge concern and it is such a pretty comb. It measures 7 3/8" by 1 3/4".

There is also a wonderful covered glass piece that must have held makeup brushes, powder, or similar items. The glass base is heavy and it is in excellent condition with no chips or nicks. It has the decorated metal lid to cover it. It measures 8 3/4" by 4 3/4" at the base. It is approximately 3 1/2" tall when the lid is on.

The enameling on these pieces is in quite good condition. There are areas where the enameling has worn, but overall it is in very good condition.
