A delightful change from the drab colors found in so many extant antique gowns, this lovely pale aqua green wool late Victorian dress will be a wonderful addition to your collection! Just imagine how lovely it will look displayed in your parlor, boudoir, or … anywhere it delights you!

The demi-lined bodice fastens up the back with brass hooks and eyes; most appear to be period notions and most are present. The lining is a lightweight silk and there is some breakage around the armholes. It has been pieced together in places and I believe that this lining is either originally recycled from another dress or a period replacement of the original since traces of light blue silk are to be found. All 14 bones are present. On the right upper back, the lining comes up almost the shoulder. Near the right center back, the hand-stitching has come out where some piecing was done and a bone is loose. There is a rust-colored stain on the lining that does not show through to the front of the gown.

The lace, I believe, is a type of point needle lace. It is in very fine condition and sturdy. It is sewn onto a mesh. There are a few splits in the mesh. Decorative slits in the wool are joined with a herringbone stitch; a few stitches are broken.

The bodice accentuates the pigeon-breasted style by the use of a white silk under blouse. The green wool, trimmed with lace, hangs loosely. I’ve tried to capture this in the photos.

The wool skirt is unlined and also has vertical decorative slashes, closed with the herringbone stitching. Along each slash, French knots add decoration. Lace medallions are placed at the bottom of each decorative slash. The skirt fastens at center back with hooks and eyes.

Overall condition is very good. There are a few scattered tiny holes in the wool, much smaller than a pencil eraser, some splits in the herringbone stitches and in the netting that holds the lace. The lining silk is split in the armscye areas and the lining rises higher on one side than the other. None of these flaws are particularly noticeable and this is a very sturdy gown, very presentable for display.

Approximate measurements given for display purposes only:

Bust: 33” Waist: 27” Hips: 42” Skirt Length: 41”

Dress is displayed over a mid 19th century hoop to show the decorative aspects of the skirt and is available separately.

More photos are available, please drop us a note and we will be more than happy to provide them.
