Dating to circa 1905, this delectable Victorian skirt features gored and pleated panels. The woven pattern in the fabric provides just about all the decoration needed, but black lace accents that outline the inverted pleats on the bottom third of the skirt and at the hips gives it that little extra panache! There are no pleats at the waistline but there is a slight train in the back.
The skirt is fully lined with black polished cotton. In fact there is a stamp near the hem that reads . Fast Black. The hem is finished with a heavy brush braid and a heavy weight strip of black velvet, which holds the flared shape of the hemline out. The back closes with 6 hooks and eyes and there are three vertically set hooks to attach the skirt to a bodice.
As to flaws .. we really had to look for them! There are a few very small places at the hem, right above the brush braid hem protector that have worn slightly and show white. They are barely noticeable. One of the 6 sets of hooks and eyes at the back closure are missing and one hook at the waistband.
This was very plainly made for a wealthy young lady as this skirt has all the markings of a high quality garment.
Please note that this is definitely a totally jet black skirt. Some of the photos have been lightened in order to show the lace and the fabric pattern.
Although we do not encourage the wear of antique garments, this vintage antique skirt is very wearable but has a very tiny waist measurement.
Approximate measurements:
Waist: 20 Length: 38 ½
Item ID: 60000
