A rare and wonderful antique natural (not cultured) pearl torsade necklace, 16" long, comprised of three (3) individual strands.
This necklace is a Victorian era beauty, the pearls have that mellow buttery shade that old linen acquires over the years, and thankfully these pearls have retained a fine luster. Three strands of these pearls are shown gently twisted together in a classic look that completes with a fine sterling silver box clasp.
Now, this box clasp is a beauty, a handmade clasp that is set with old European cut natural diamonds in each corner of the clasp, accenting the astonishingly lovely natural hand carved sapphire cabochon gemstone. This particular sapphire is a bright medium blue and was likely carved in India during the Raj period, and in the grand Mughal style. While many jewels are offered these days with supposed "Mughal/Mugal/Mogal" gemstones, they are cut/carved in a huge production style, and are of the lowest quality. This sapphire displays a fine color and is nicely translucent - a beauty that measures just over two (2) carats. Box clasp closes with a nice strong "snap" and is nice and snug - not loose at all!
I wore this piece with the clasp visible to the side, it's just too lovely to hide!
Overall condition is very fine++. According to the prior owner the pearls were re-strung last year, they seem secure, and they lay wonderfully - no puckering or bends in the necklace when worn, all quality! No marks, sterling grade on clasp is verified via acid test and the necklace has been reviewed for authenticity with our consulting bench jeweler.
A circa 1870s (+ -) beauty! And, of course a fabulous gift!
