Something a bit unusual and certainly rare in this antique 800 silver (stamped "800") & applied 18K yellow gold garment fastener or clasp.
Six (6) individual chains of similar length meet in the center 'medallion' of obvious handmade and hand cut design, accented by applied 18K decoration spokes (feathers?) of the star and a flower bud to the center. The center medallion measures 2 1/8" diameter and is heavy gauge 800 grade silver, overall weighting in at 93.6 grams - 3.5 ounces. The liberal use of the applied 18K gold makes me think this piece was a commission for a person of some wealth, and while I don't know the exact date of this piece, the consensus of opinion of the dealers I've asked is squarely mid-19th century.
Condition is very fine+++. It is a wonderful decorative piece -- and with its spidery appearance it is a very striking display.
Rare, and if anyone has any information, I'm curious!
