A fine and lovely antique bar pin crafted from solid 14K yellow gold with fine rose cut diamonds set in icy platinum bead settings, the center larger diamond sits snug in a mille-grain bezel setting.
One of the sure signs of quality in gem set jewelry is in the settings for the gems. Thick or uneven settings are a tell-tale sign of rushing or lack of talent. The slender, narrow bezel setting of the rose cut diamond shows a high level of craftsmanship - it is finely tapered to contour to the shape of the diamond and doesn't overpower or attempt to up-play it. The diamond is difficult to measure as there are no accurate formulas for rose cut diamonds, suffice it to say, the diamond measures 4.5mm X 6.5mm giving it the appearance of 1/2 carat to perhaps 60 points, and it is nice and clean with a slightly cape color - perhaps L/M color, as appropriate to its age and the diamonds available.
Pin measures 1/4" X 2 1/2" and is stamped "585" on the clasping pin. It has a clasping mechanism that locks into position, a rarely seen type that is one I associate with higher end jewelry. No maker's marks found, (unattributed!) but surely a lovely quality and gorgeous antique bar pin dating to around circa 1900.
Lovely!
