On offer here is a great bronze sculpture of an impressive puma (panther) lying on a rock in a tense and expectant pose. The sculpture delights with the perfectly captured anatomical details of this wild menacing-looking beast, which have been emphasized by the smooth and elegantly glistening surface texture.
This bronze is stamped and signed Antoine Louis Barye (1796-1875), a well-listed French sculptor, acclaimed one of the great animal life artists of the French school. He began his career as a goldsmith, like many sculptors of the Romantic Period. After studying under sculptor Francois-Joseph Bosio and painter Baron Antoine-Jean Gros he was in 1818 admitted to the École des Beaux Arts. In 1823, while working for Fauconnier, he discovered his true predilection from watching the wild beasts in the Jardin des Plantes. He excelled in representing animals in their most familiar attitudes. In 1854 he was made Professor of Drawings at the Museum of Natural History and was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1868.
