Antonio Borsato so loved his Madonna sculptures. Each one was created with reverence. This one was one of his oldest ones; in fact, it was only released in Europe and not the Untied States. It was before he could afford felt on the bottom of the piece. To find one like this is such Very Good Condition is very propitious. There are no chips, cracks or losses other than some slight rubbing here and there. The lovely shawl has subtle stars on it. The expressions are ethereal. Borsato would make each piece a bit different than others, Perhaps a tilt of the head; different position of fingers, and, of course, different colors and shades. What a loss to the world when Borsato was killed in an automobile accident in 1982, at the height of his career. After studying with Cacciapuoti, he advanced to his own high level of excellence, indeed, many feel surpassing the excellence of his mentor. His work is exhibited in the Vatican; museums; and many significant private collections. He is considered the Michaelangelo of the 20th Century. His porcelain sculptures should be handed down to future generations. I can think of no sculptor who has followed in his footsteps.
