This is a beautiful still life with a bouquet of poppies set on the ledge of an open window, with a view to vast landscape scenery with a snow-covered mountain backdrop. The sense of depth is wonderful!
Flowers have been irresistible to painters through the ages. These days we've lost much of the symbolism associated with them, but earlier painters chose flowers to convey very specific messages about their subjects.
The red poppy, originally a symbol of death, changed during the middle of the 20th century to a symbol of Remembrance. It is often associated with "Remembrance Day" in Europe, or "Veterans Day" ("Armistice Day" originally) in the USA (11 November: 11/11 at 11:00 AM), which commemorates the deceased of the First and Second World Wars.Artist:
The painting is signed "M. Haterich", by an unidentified German artist, and is from early to mid 20th Century.
The picture itself is 30 cm /12 inches high and 40 cm /15.75 inches wide.
The frame itself is 5 cm /2 inches wide.
The painting is in Good Condition. It is varnished, has crackling, minimal abrasions and a dent in the canvas just above the mountain on the right.
The moulded frame has been previously refinished in grey lacquer. It is in Good Condition with minor abrasions and signs of wear.
