He has cut out a large piece of the trunk, but seems to have paused to for a while, standing with the axe in his hand. Behind him his obedient dog is seated next to the water jug, patiently waiting for his master. The painting is signed "G. H. Jupp" lower left for the British artist George Herbert Jupp (1869-?).
