Ivory Netsuke, Japanese, of Ancient Man With Staff and Large Headdress

$250 USDIvory Netsuke, Japanese, of Ancient Man With Staff and Large Headdress

Collectibles:Oriental:Ivory:Netsuke:Japanese:Ancient
This interesting netsuke has a head that moves. I think it is quite engaging and certainly a conversation piece. It is old ivory, with some wear expected with age. Nicely detailed and signed. He is 2 and 5/8 inches tall. BRIEF HISTORY OF NETSUKE (pronounced nets-keh.) When kimonos where the common sartorial choice in Japan a sash or obi was wrapped around the waist. Many men used a device called an inro, a layered box used to store their snuff and other items. A string was run through the sides ...

$300 USD ReducedREDUCED Carved Ivory Netsuke - Coiled Snake With Captured Small Animal - Signed

Collectibles:Oriental:Ivory:Netsuke:Snake
This is an interesting netsuke, with inlaid eyes. The subject matter, a snake with his captured prey, reflects real life, although some people may prefer a more saccharine theme. This piece is signed. It measures nearly 1 and 3/4 inches tall, and is over 1 and 3/4 inches across. It is in Good to Very Good Condition. A netsuke is a form of small sculpture which developed in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years. Netsuke served both functional and aesthetic purposes. The kimono, the ...

Collectibles:Oriental:Ivory:Carved Ball With Snakes And Faces:Snakes:Decorative:Decorative Arts:Asian:Ivory:Carved Ball:Snake:Faces:Oriental:Asian:Japanese
This is simply incredible. I have had it for many years, and I love to keep turning it over in my hand, as one face becomes another; the eyes are in both faces, but turning it over, the face is totally different. One face is a menacing one, and the other is obviously blowing through his mouth, with his cheeks puffed out. It also has snakes artfully carved. It has a hole through it, so it might have been used as an inro. Quite an unusual piece. The ball is about 1 inch in diameter; the stand ...
Outstanding Finely-Carved Ivory Mongolian Warrior, signed

$3,800 USD Offers ConsideredOutstanding Finely-Carved Ivory Mongolian Warrior, signed

Collectibles:Oriental:Ivory:Mongolian Warrior
This is truly a striking piece. He is large, about 10 inches tall. His headpiece has masks on both sides; his bow (?) is removable; as I recall, the arrows in the quiver are removable, but they are in snugly, so I didn't try. The detail is incredible. I purchased this in 1985, when I invested in a number of ivories in New Orleans.

$750 USD ReducedREDUCED Very Well-Carved Japanese Ivory Netsuke, Signed

Pictures do not do this justice. This gentleman has the greatest expression on his face, as he is walking, carrying a bird cage, and eating a snack. The workmanship on his clothing is fantastic. Even the soles of his shoes are well carved. On his right lower leg is a small round mother of pearl with the artist's signature. This is a truly unique and highly desirable piece. BRIEF HISTORY OF NETSUKE (pronounced nets-keh.) When kimonos were the common sartorial choice in Japan, a sash or obi was ...

Japanese Ivory Netsuke - Boat with Five Passengers, Monkey And Luggage

$450 USDJapanese Ivory Netsuke - Boat with Five Passengers, Monkey And Luggage

Collectibles:Oriental:Ivory:Netsuke
This is quite a different and unusual netsuke. While boats have been frequently frequently carved as okomonos and less frequently as netsukes, I have not seen one carved with the subtle humor. There is the rower, who has stretched out in the most comfortable position. There is the lovely young woman. Then an adult man. There is a young boy holding what looks like a ball. There is another lady with a fan, as well as trunk. And let's not forget the monkey! The boat is well carved and trimmed along ...

SOLD Unusual Ivory Netsuke - Man Carrying Mask And Basket, Japanese

SOLDSOLD Unusual Ivory Netsuke - Man Carrying Mask And Basket, Japanese

Collectibles:Oriental:Ivory:Netsuke:Japanese
This is a well-carved Japanese netsuke. I am not sure of the meaning of the mask and basket. It does show some signs of age and display, but overall it is in Very Good Condition. BRIEF HISTORY OF NETSUKE (pronounced nets-keh.) When kimonos where the common sartorial choice in Japan a sash or obi was wrapped around the waist. Many men used a device called an inro, a layered box used to store their snuff and other items. A string was run through the sides of the inro and when pulled kept the ...
