Meiji Period Japanese Ivory Okimono, Signed, of Two Women and a Boy, Bathing

$350 USDMeiji Period Japanese Ivory Okimono, Signed, of Two Women and a Boy, Bathing

Antiques:Ivory:Okimono
If you have browsed my shop, you must have realized how much I love antique ivory carvings, from something as large of the Ivory Bouquet to the the small items, e. g. netsukes, okimonos, etc. My personal collection of netsukes and okimonos have exceeded the space in my two cabinets and so I am listing some of them. This piece is 2 inches in height. It has some age cracks, and loss of leg on boy, otherwise in Very Condition.

$1,400 USDAntique Ivory Netsuke of Oni Washerwoman With Offspring, Signed, c. 1860, Well-Carved

Antiques:Ivory:Netsuke:Oni
I will let the pictures speak for themselves, This unusual netsuke measures two inches tall, and is in Very Good to Excellent Condition with no losses. BRIEF HISTORY OF NETSUKE (pronounced nets-keh.) When kimonos where the common sartorial choice in Japan a sash or obi was wrapped around the waist. Many men used a device called an inro, a layered box used to store their snuff and other items. A string was run through the sides of the inro and when pulled kept the layered compartments tight. The ...
Adorable Cat and Dog Carved Ivory Whimsey, c 1900

$350 USDAdorable Cat and Dog Carved Ivory Whimsey, c 1900

Antiques:Ivory:Dog:Cat:Basket
This is one of my favorites! A dog and cat amiably sharing a basket. In the late 1800s and very early 1900s, ivory was imported to our country, and some skilled artists, especially in New England, made whimseys such as this. This measures 1 and 3/8" x 3 and 1/2". It is in Very Good Condition, with the expected signs of age; minor rubs, slight display scratches; but no losses. Pictures are part of the description.
Antique Ivory Netsuke of Elderly Man, Signed

$500 USDAntique Ivory Netsuke of Elderly Man, Signed

Antiques:Ivory:Netsuke
This is unusual because of the turned head. I have not seen this presentation before. The basketweave pattern of the ivory is quite nice, and the piece well-carved. Signed on bottom. A netsuke is a form of small sculpture which developed in Japan over a period of more than three hundred years. Netsuke served both functional and aesthetic purposes. The kimono, the traditional form of Japanese dress, had no pockets. Women would tuck small personal items into their sleeves, but men suspended their ...
Beautifully Carved Antique Continental Ivory Miniature Of The Pied Piper -

$950 USDBeautifully Carved Antique Continental Ivory Miniature Of The Pied Piper -

Antiques:Ivory:Pied Piper
As you may have gathered, one of my special loves is finely carved ivory. I particularly like miniatures. When I find one that has an unusual subject matter, I am ecstatic! This fills all of my wishes. This Pied Piper, playing his flute, has several rats at his feet enthralled by his tune. This is late 18th Century. He is a tad under 3 inches tall. With the stand to which he is attached, he is 6 inches tall. In Excellent Condition.
REDUCED Chinese Carved Ivory Figure, Man with Monkey

$1,400 USD Offers ConsideredREDUCED Chinese Carved Ivory Figure, Man with Monkey

Antiques:Ivory:Man With Monkey:Chinese
How unbelievably enchanting this piece is. I believe the man may be a priest, but am not certain. As you must realize if you browse through my shop, I really love the unusual. Please look at item 178, which is really nice as a companion piece. I have always displayed them together, ever since buying them in February, 1985, in a New Orleans antique shop. I honestly don't have that great a memory; just kept the valuation slip all these years!

Antique Ivory Round Box With Tigers on Top, Meiji Period

$200 USDAntique Ivory Round Box With Tigers on Top, Meiji Period

Antiques:Ivory:Box:Tiger
This is a very interesting piece from the Meiji Period. While tiger motifs are seen occasionally on Asian ivory pieces, this has the added feature of the carved tiger head on a round disk on the cover, with the two tigers above and below. The graining of the ivory is lovely. (So many times the basketweave pattern is not seen well.) It is a bit over 2 and 1/2 inches across, and stands a bit over 1 and 1/4 inches tall. It has seen some use through the years. There are two cracks on either side of ...
