Large selection of fine quality antique American Victorian and Fancy Oak furniture and accessories
Incredible 1870’s American Victorian Walnut Renaissance Revival Matching Three Piece Bedroom Set with Outstanding Hand Carving and Burl Work. This American made bedroom set competes with the best of Belter, Meeks, Thomas Brooks, John Jeliff, and other American Victorian cabinetmakers. Inside the mirror back we found an old newspaper (see pictures) dated September 7, 1871 from Rochester, New York. We know that Charles Robinson was a famous cabinet maker in that location at that time (see “American Furniture of the 19th Century 1840-1880 by Eileen and Richard Dubrow page 50) therefore, it is quite possible he was the maker. This ornate matching three-piece bedroom suite is made of walnut and has outstanding carved ornamentation all over it. There is not a place that is more than a couple of inches wide that does not have some form of decoration (either beautiful burl panels or very ornate hand carving) This Walnut Renaissance Revival Bedroom Suite includes a matched high back bed, matching washstand and matching dresser. Please note the rounded, inset veneered column corners of both of these pieces. It is indeed a beautiful and very uncommon treatment! The massive headboard and footboard of the bed has a rich central burled walnut panel, and many accent panels of burl walnut. The bed and dresser have a fancy carved crest with massive shield carved in the center and huge carved shells for the tops of the crests. Also the bed has a very pretty footboard with original carved elaborate siderails. The matching round corner marble top bureau is a full drop center to two bottom drawers with marble tops (all in excellent shape – no spots or stains) and has open carved candlecups, fine handmade pulls, and very ornately carved posts that match the headboard, and a corresponding carved crest that matches the headboard. This is a very well made pretty suite with heavy construction and many fine unusual features. Circa: 1870. Measurements: Bed = approximately 64” wide (widest point), 81” long and 8 foot tall with out the castors and an inch and a ½ taller with the castors. A modern full pillow-top mattress set will fit this bed (will take a mattress up to 54” x 73 ½”) Dresser = approximately 56 ½ wide, 21 ½ deep and 8 foot tall Washstand = 34 long and 16 ½ wide. The finish is in EXCELLENT Refinished Condition. Mirror is original but has been re-silvered. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
