This is a profusely carved very high quality quartersawn oak Drop Front desk. It is finely carved everywhere and none of the carving is applied. The desk is 49 1/2" tall to the top of the lion carved gallery/crest. It is 41 1/2" wide and 22 1/2" deep. It has great carved griffins at the corners. Each of the sides has two incredible carved panels; the lower on each side is floral and leaf carved, while the upper on each side has carved winged griffins. The drop front has a carved head in the middle which serves as the pull, and an opposing man and woman on winged griffin drawn chariots. There is also much fine scroll carving on the drop front. Below the drop front are two drawers with carved heads for pulls, and deeply carved acorns and oak leaves across their whole surface. The two doors below each have carved opposing winged griffins. Behind the door on the right is a shelved area, while on the left is a vertical file area. The two carved panels on each side, the two doors, and drop front are surrounded by deep exquisite floral and scroll carving. There is rope carving around the midsection of the desk, and very fine carving on either side of the drop front, around the cabinet at the bottom and around the cabinet at the top. Please take time with the photos, and I can send more if you need them. They are much more descriptive of the extraordinary quality and rarity of this desk than my words. Suffice it to say that the desk has extraordinary carving everywhere on it, it is all incised, and it is all in very fine condition. The desk is completely functional and free of any defects or repairs. This is the best of the best in fine carved American oak furniture.
