This is an exceptional work on laid paper from France dating from the mid to late 1700s in the manner of Boucher and LeMoine. The flamboyant style and intricate details are characteristic of the 18thC French Old Masters. This work is a red chalk on paper. It is possible that it was made as a contre-epreuve, where a freshly made drawing is pressed against another sheet of paper to produce a reverse image that was then often used to make engravings. The overall lighter tones may explain this. It may also be the original drawing, but we are raising this other possibility to be conservative. It is not an engraving or reproduction. The work measures approximately 16.5" x 13" (42cm x 33cm). It is fully laid to a heavier sheet. It will make a wonderful addition to the collector of fine European art.
