This work of art is exceptionally detailed. The fishermen are utilizing a net, a basket, and a fishing pole. The rippled water is surrounded by foliage, and the background is interspersed with trees. There are numerous structures, which include dwellings, shrines, a bridge, and a pagoda. In the far distance are mountains, clouds, and flying birds. The entire scene is bordered by a panel of auspicious symbols, including flowers, the sacred vase, and the royal umbrella.
This framed piece was originally attached to a fire screen, which was used to shield the ladies’ complexions (or cosmetics) from the direct heat of the flames. The frame has small holes drilled around the edge where it was affixed to the fire screen stand and it definitely needs replacing. I have kept it “as is” in order to protect the textile, thinking it best to leave the remounting to a professional.
There is some water damage to the lower left corner of the work, which can clearly be seen in the photos, and there are a few stray threads that can be seen with a magnifying glass. This tapestry is in very good condition, showing no holes, rips, tears or damage.
The color in the photographs is quite accurate, and any “cloudy” areas are merely a reflection of the glass. Collectors should note that in antique pieces, natural dyes don't produce bright colors, only deeper shades.
It measures 20 ˝” by just over 21” including the frame, and weighs 4 lbs. 12 oz.
And if anyone has any insight or opinions on this piece, please share them with us!
