This wonderful old quilt comes from Victorian times. Note the use of military “olive drab” wool in the making of this piece. It does not have the high society embroidery pulling it all together. My guess is that its pieces were boxed up and put in a drawer for future use. The future came, but not right away. The top was assembled by machine and the backing was added by hand stitching. It has seen some use, but is still a remarkable piece.

The old wool fabric bits in this quilt are wonderful. As you might imagine with a piece this old, it has a few issues, moth bites and some stitching that has come undone. But overall – it is a wonderful example of Americana.

The pieces in this quilt are mostly wool, velvet and a little rayon and cotton. And most certainly before dyes became more stable in fabric. It has a thick batting and is backed with an old timey flannel.

This wool, velvet and cotton quilt is simply wonderful. It has been loved and kept many folks warm on a cold winter’s night.
