This stunning piece of American history comes right from the history books. It is the 6 board Pennsylvania Dutch construction with large strap hinges, a lock and beautiful floral painting on the front. The top was grain-painted in three blocks with flowers, but so many people sat on this fantastic piece of furniture that much of the paint has faded. These chests were used as extra seats for guests and housed linen and blankets. They were the forerunner to chest of drawers and to the “hope chest” as they were often used to store a woman’s dowry. (All of that hand-stitched linen that she brought to the marriage.)

This is a longer than usual blanket chest and in doing research we discovered that the blanket chest was also reserved as a coffin if one was needed in the family. (Thank heaven this is still with us.)

The inside is clean and in good repair. At some point one of the ends has been professionally repaired when a board obviously split and the other end has been glued for the same reason. It is still sturdy and a magnificent piece of Americana.

Take a close look at the pictures you are not likely to see another one like this. Right down to the feet, the painting of tulips and other flowers is fantastic.
