We have put many items on sale for Christmas--check us out!
We are not sure of origin, although it came most recently from Britain. It has a bit of a Middle Eastern look to it. If it is Middle Eastern in origin, it was made to be exported since this is definitely a western style inkwell. During Victorian times, Middle Eastern designs were used by many British manufacturers as well.
It is quite a small inkwell, which in our opinion adds to its beauty. It measures 3 3/4" long, 3 deep and 1 1/2" tall.
Condition is very good. The enameling is all intact. There are some dark areas on the metal, particularly on the pen rest in front. The bottom is speckled with red; it is possible that it was entirely painted with red at some point. The hinges are solid and work well. We believe one of the inserts may be somewhat newer than the other; the metal is a bit thinner and brighter, and it doesnt fit quite as well as the other. Both are stained with ink inside.
This very nice inkwell would grace any collection.
