19th Century Miniature Portrait painted on ivory

We were struck by the interesting hair style on this fashionable lady, particularly the ringleted bangs hanging artfully on her forehead. Her face is also interesting; maybe a little uncomfortable at having to sit for her portrait, and yet there is a feeling of confidence as well. That, and just the hint of a double chin, makes us think this lady was a mid 19th century wife and woman of the household, possibly with a child or two.

This is a nicely painted portrait which appears to be unsigned. We are not willing to remove the back to check for a possible signature on the ivory disk itself. The curved glass is held in by a simply decorated metal rim. The frame is ebonized wood, which has crazed over the years – giving it an alligator skin look. The back is covered with a page of old text.

This is a small miniature; the frame measures 4.5” by just under 4”, while the portrait itself measures 2.5” by 1.75”.

This is a very nice, older miniature, well worth hanging in a collection or by itself.
