Belgian Tin Advertising Yo-Yo – Cichorei de Beukelaar

This advertising yo-yo has a wonderful graphic of a woman in traditional headdress hoisting a cup of hot… chicory drink! Chicory root has been used for years, particularly in Europe, as a cheap substitute for coffee. Its use was especially prevalent during war when coffee was scarce, which leads us to believe that this yo-yo dates to either before or shortly after World War II. The de Beukelaar Chicory company was in business during that time.

Both sides of the yo-yo show the same picture. This yo-yo does show its age; there are chips on the edges that have some corrosion and a couple of spots with corrosion on the inside of the yo-yo. These can be seen well in the photos – in fact, these areas look worse in the photos than they do in real life. The lithography has some faded areas on one side; the other side displays quite nicely.

This is a hard to find yo-yo in any condition, and would make a great addition to an advertising or yo-yo collection.
