Julius Chein Mercury Dime Register Bank

From the 1960s, this is a hard to find dime bank made by the Chein Company. Even though this bank is from a later period, it seems to be an uncommon bank to locate.

While almost all register banks couldn’t be opened until a certain dollar amount was reached, Chein knew children pretty well, having made toys for almost a hundred years. Chein’s flat register banks allowed opening at any time: just push the bump at the bottom of the front cover. Saved on wear and tear to the bank.

This particular bank is showing some age. No rust, but there are some surface and paint scratches. It doesn’t have the typical all-over edge-wear associated with register banks. Perhaps this had to do with the squared off (and sharp) corners.

Oh…. And it works too.
