Come take a look at our holiday sale items! ~~We wish you a joyful and peace-filled holiday season!
Cluthra glass is a partially transparent, two layered glass. Chemicals fixed between the two layers create small air pockets in the middle (or slightly off center, actually) of white splotches. This creates an amazing effect when light shines through from behind. Cluthra glass was made in a variety of colors. This vase may be considered amethyst, although it has a bit more pink in it, making it closer to a delicate plum color. Steuben numbered all of their shapes; this vase is number 2683.
Steuben made Cluthra glass in the early 1900s, into the early 1930s. This piece is signed in the middle of the polished pontil with the acid-etched Steuben fleur-de-lis mark. Unfortunately, we could not pick up the signature in the photos, although numerous attempts were made. The vase has to be held just right for the mark to be visible.
We took photos in various lights and with a couple of different backgrounds; it is amazing how different the piece looks in each. The photos which look more "purple" are closest to the true color, but the pinks really come out when light shines through the glass.
This vase is a heavy piece. It measures 6.25" tall and about 6" in diameter at the shoulder. Weight is almost three pounds.
Condition is excellent, with a few very small scratches here and there - to be expected in a piece of glass this old. The base has some scratching commensurate with its age.
This is a rare and beautiful piece of Steuben glass that belongs in your art glass collection!
