TPS Suzy Bouncing Ball with Box

From the PREMIER Japanese toy manufacturer, T.P.S. (Toplay, Ltd) of the ‘50s and ‘60s: Suzy Bouncing Ball. According to William Gallagher’s book, Japanese Toys: Amusing Playthings from the Past, this toy was made around 1960 and limited to about 50,000 pieces world wide.

It is near mint with a few scratches, most likely leaving the manufacturing plant in this condition. The toy looks as if was tried a few times and then put back in the box for over 40 years. The head, used in countless Japanese toys from many different manufacturers, is made of a soft vinyl plastic and is very supple. Suzy’s skirt shows no signs of wear.

The box is in very good condition. There is a tear on the end flap, where someone must have torn off a price tag. A hole is poked in the cover from the rivet on Suzy’s arm, and there are the usual creases from age. The box lithography is art in itself.

The action on this toy is marvelous. When wound, Suzy bounces her ball very quickly. The bottom of the toy is balanced so that Suzy rocks with the bouncing, giving a very lifelike effect. Both arms move as the ball bounces.
