SALE PENDING 19th Century French Porcelain Snuff Box

The herb of courage – snuff may have had that effect on some! This little porcelain snuff box is labeled ‘herbe de courage’ on the top, and is decorated with hand painted flowers on top, front and back. Its tall graceful shape gives it an unusual and attractive appeal. The metal mount is nicely tooled; the clasp is in the shape of a harp and music sheet. Tiny sprays of flowers adorn the inside of the lid and the inside bottom. It is most likely French from the late 1800s.

The base of the box measures 1” by .75” deep. It gracefully widens to 2” wide by 1.5” deep and reaches a height of just under 2”. Condition is very good; there are no chips or cracks in the porcelain. The hinge is nice and tight. The clasp does not shut tightly – it would not hold snuff securely today! There is a mark on the bottom, but I have been unable to identify it. This elegant snuff box will grace any collection and may even give a bit of courage to its owner, snuff or no snuff!
