Carved Wooden Hat Inkwell

$195 USDCarved Wooden Hat Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This beautifully carved hat could be a riding hat, but could also be a hiking hat. We believe it is the latter – and was possibly sold as a souvenir of a mountain or alpine resort. It was carved carefully and with great detail, featuring a wide, thin brim, a band with a buckle in the front and a cheerful sprig of flowers in the front. The top part of the hat has been textured with tiny indentations which add interest and variety. The wood has a wonderful patina. The number 1898 is handwritten on ...
Ceramic Curling Stone Inkwell

$142 USDCeramic Curling Stone Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Curling has been a favorite sport in Scotland since the 6th century. The game of pushing and sliding stones across the ice has since traveled to Canada and parts of the US as well. This inkwell is designed to look like the curling stone used in this sport. Made of ceramic, the surface has a transfer print that is designed to look like granite. A stripe around the middle was left unglazed and was tooled to give it a rough feel and appearance, again just like rock. The hinged lid is shaped as the ...
Carved German Farm Dog Inkstand

$215 USDCarved German Farm Dog Inkstand

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Who wouldn’t want this loyal, intent dog guarding his inkwell? This great inkstand dates to probably the early 1930s and comes from Germany. The base is a slab of wood, with bark still intact around the edge. The dog is beautifully carved, with a great expression and a very realistic pose. He has wonderful glass eyes. This looks like a souvenir piece, as there is a place name on the base, but we haven’t been able to figure out what it says. Condition of this inkstand is excellent, except for the ...
Brass inkstand with faceted cut glass inkwell

$95 USDBrass inkstand with faceted cut glass inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This is a simple yet very elegant inkstand from the end of the 1800s or possibly early 1900s. It is made of heavy brass, shaped perfectly to catch those ink spills. The glass inkwell is cut into a wonderful faceted pattern. It has a very pale pink tone to it, which is difficult to see in the photos. The lid has a great pointed finial, which crowns the whole stand very nicely. Measurements are about 7” in diameter, and about 4 1/2" tall to the top of the finial. Condition is very good. There is ...
Ceramic Hand Painted Inkwell with Birds

$85 USDCeramic Hand Painted Inkwell with Birds

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This fun ceramic inkwell makes us think of spring, with its hand painted swallows and blossoming stems. The colors are pink and blue with dark red silhouetted birds and plants. It is a bit larger than many of these ceramic inkwells at just over 2” square and about 3 1/2" tall. This inkwell is typical Victorian, and was made in the late 1900s. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or scratches. There is a bit of paint loss on the blue stripe running down the front, which may have ...
SALE Novelty traveling inkwell – violin case!

$270 USD SaleSALE Novelty traveling inkwell – violin case!

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
These figural traveling inkwells are hard to find – especially in this condition. This one is in the shape of a violin case, complete with a little handle. Covered in leather, or possibly sharkskin dyed black, this is a great piece from a by-gone age. A button on the front pushes to open the violin case lid. The ink bottle has a spring loaded lid which works perfectly. A pen wipe is also included. This inkwell has been used; the bottle is heavily ink stained and there are tiny specks of ...
Ceramic Inkwell with Hand Painted Flowers

$65 USDCeramic Inkwell with Hand Painted Flowers

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This inkwell features an unusual scalloped shape, and bright, cheerful flowers on both the base and lid. It was probably meant for a lady’s desk, and was sure to brighten even the most melancholy day. It has a scalloped shape with six rounded “points” – on both the base and the lid. The flowers are hand painted in pink, purple, blue and red. It measures 2 1/2" in diameter (from point to point) and about 2 1/4" tall. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or scratches in the ceramic. All ...
British Folk Art Carved Inkwell – Duck with Bakelite Beak

$125 USDBritish Folk Art Carved Inkwell – Duck with Bakelite Beak

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This Art Deco duck may have added a bit of whimsy to a child’s desk in the 1920s. The duck is carved to look like it is standing at rest, with its beak resting on its beak. Nicely carved and stained, it has a realistic look to it, even though the lines are clean and stylized. The eyes are glass and the beak is Bakelite. The duck is attached to a barrel or pot shaped inkwell. The hinged lid opens to reveal a ceramic insert. Condition is very good. The wood and Bakelite have a nice patina. The ...
Cast metal horse head inkwell – Made in Japan

$150 USDCast metal horse head inkwell – Made in Japan

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
What a fun inkwell for the horse lover! This cast metal inkwell features a lifelike horse’s head set against a horseshoe. The horse is painted a brownish gray (with some silver metal showing through at the nose and eye). The bridle and horseshoe are accented in red. The horse’s head is wonderful – showing some veining, flaring nostrils and ears perked up, waiting for the command to be given: Giddiup!! The face can be lifted (by the ear) to reveal two milk glass inserts. The base is clearly ...
Clear Early American Pattern Glass Hobnail Inkwell

$95 USDClear Early American Pattern Glass Hobnail Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
While the hobnail pattern is a fairly common one in Early American Pattern Glass items, inkwells in this pattern are not so often found. This one is a nice example of this fun and eye catching pattern. What we especially like about this piece is the different sized hobnails, which create great optical effects. The top of the inkwell has very small hobnails, while the sides are larger. The loose lid has a ring of large hobnails around the outside, then medium sized rings and one larger hobnail in ...
Cut Glass Inkwell in Chair Inkstand with Pen Holder

$95 USDCut Glass Inkwell in Chair Inkstand with Pen Holder

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
What a great figural inkstand this is! Brass rods have been shaped into a chair, complete with pen holder. An upside down heart shaped shield helps hold the cut glass inkwell in and decorates the front and back. The crystal clear inkwell has beveled edges and a hinged brass lid with a nicely tooled decoration around its top rim. Condition is very good. The brass has a nice patina with no tarnish or corrosion. The inkwell is in excellent condition with no nicks, scratches or flea bites. The hinge ...
Carved Wooden Souvenir Inkstand – Eagle and Montana!

$265 USDCarved Wooden Souvenir Inkstand – Eagle and Montana!

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This fierce eagle dares anyone to open up the inkwell – that is, unless you have a love for Montana! This is a very fun and nicely carved souvenir inkstand from the early 1900s. It even has little black glass eyes! Condition is very good. There is a great deal of ink staining the inside, and there is some dried ink on the inside of the bottle (which still exists!). There are a few spots of ink on the outside as well, particularly on the pen holder. We love to see ink stains ourselves, because it ...
British Silver Plate Inkstand with Double Pottery Inkwells – 1883

$235 USDBritish Silver Plate Inkstand with Double Pottery Inkwells – 1883

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This unusual and very decorative silver plate inkstand has a story – one that we have not yet been able to learn much about… yet. Engraved in the front are the words: IN MEMORIUM FEBRUARY 20TH 1883. We wonder… who died? And to whom was the inkstand given? It is a lovely piece of silver and pottery. The stand features detailed open molded work and interesting cut work around the outside. The brick colored pottery inkwells have matching silver plated lids and they fit snugly into the holes cut ...
Ceramic Lady’s Inkwell with Saucer – Gold and Blue Trim

$60 USDCeramic Lady’s Inkwell with Saucer – Gold and Blue Trim

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Here we have a simple but very sweet lady’s inkwell, coming to you from the turn of the last century. Its subtly scalloped shape is mirrored by the attached saucer. An interesting counterpoint is the more geometric detailing on both the inkwell and saucer, which consists of gold trim and little blue flowers. The inkwell base measures 4” by 3 1/4". The inkwell is about 2” tall. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or scratches in the ceramic. The painted flowers and gold detailing is all ...
Early to mid 19th century Inkstand

$475 USDEarly to mid 19th century Inkstand

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This is an absolutely wonderful and quite old inkstand. Based on style and type of decoration and metal tooling, we date it from early to mid 1800s. It includes everything a writer could want: inkwell, sander and pen holder. Each of the three containers is removeable, and each has its own lid with a unique finial. The inkwell has a rooster, the pen holder has a bird with wings outstretched – possibly a dove – and the sander has a thistle flower. It is possible that these are family or cultural ...
Emerald green hand blown glass inkwell

$95 USDEmerald green hand blown glass inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
We were first attracted to this inkwell because of the wonderful color, and then because of its almost liquid shape. It is hand blown, with a cut and smoothly polished pontil. The lid, a polished metal which we believe to be aluminum, has been machined to fit perfectly into the metal rimmed neck of the inkwell. Based on the round, polished pontil and decoration of the glass, we’d like to attribute this to Whitefriars, but we have not been able to confirm that yet. We believe this dates to around ...
French Faience inkwell marked Aladin

$86 USDFrench Faience inkwell marked Aladin

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This little inkwell exemplifies early French Faience with its bright bold colors and designs. It features a rich cobalt blue background, with fun red and yellow flowers peeking out from behind green and yellow leaves. The inkwell has an interesting six sided shape, with a lift off lid. Top of the inkwell and the lid are decorated with yellow flowers. This inkwell dates to between 1900 and 1930. Condition is very good. As is often the case with the soft clay and glazes of Faience, there is a ...
“Black Forest” Bear Inkstand

$275 USD“Black Forest” Bear Inkstand

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This bear has that perfect ursine look – sleepy and dangerous all at the same time. He stands guard over a stump, growling at anyone who dares open the hinged lid to expose the ink bottle within. These so-called Black Forest bears were actually carved in and around a city in Switzerland called Brienz. This region of Switzerland considered the bear its mascot and many of the famous wooden pieces carved here included bears. This piece is well carved. The bear is realistic with its small ‘piggy’ ...
Folk Art German or Swiss Carved Boot Inkwell

$185 USDFolk Art German or Swiss Carved Boot Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This boot was carved to look like it had been on many an adventure, and was finally put to rest complete with a sock stuffed in the top. It is realistically carved, down to the studs on the base and unlaced shoe strings. The carver had a bit of fun, creating a couple of “holes” in the well worn boot. These were carved purposefully and are not flaws in the inkwell. This inkwell dates to the early 1900s. The hinged lid is a carved, patterned sock. It lifts to reveal the typical molded ink bottle. ...
“Black Forest Bear” Inkstand and pen

$225 USD“Black Forest Bear” Inkstand and pen

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This inkstand is carved from a lighter wood than many Black Forest pieces. It also has a bit more of a primitive or folk art look to it, although the bear is nicely carved and has tiny black glass eyes that really stand out against his honey colored ‘fur’. We date this piece to around the 1930s or possibly a bit earlier. These Black Forest bears were actually carved in and around a city in Switzerland called Brienz. This region of Switzerland considered the bear its mascot and many of the famous ...
Gebrüder Heubach Porcelain Inkwell with Cherubs

$205 USDGebrüder Heubach Porcelain Inkwell with Cherubs

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This beautiful little inkwell was made by the company best known for porcelain dolls, Gebrüder Heubach. The Heubach brothers began making small porcelain items in 1840 and moved into dolls later in the 19th century. The factory closed in the late 1930s. This inkwell was made around the turn of the last century. The urn shaped inkwell is bolted to a small leaf shaped saucer, which features two cherubs flying among the clouds, holding onto a wreath. Two more cherubs grace the back side of the ...
Hand Painted Ceramic Inkwell – Square with attached Saucer

$60 USDHand Painted Ceramic Inkwell – Square with attached Saucer

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Picture the lady, gently nibbling the end of her pen as she considers the note she must write. Her delicate inkwell stands open, filled with ink, its saucer ready to catch the drips once she begins to write. What a sweet inkwell this is. The attached saucer’s corners are molded and outlined to look as though they are folded over. The delicate blue flowers and the red and gold detailing are hand painted on both inkwell and saucer. Condition is very good, with one flaw which likely occurred during ...
Iridescent Bohemian Art Glass Inkwell – Kralik

$225 USDIridescent Bohemian Art Glass Inkwell – Kralik

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
The smooth green glass of this lovely inkwell begs to be stroked, while its subtle iridescence offers glimpses of purple and gold when light shines on it. This elegant inkwell is a lovely example of Bohemian art glass from the turn of the last century. It was made in the late 1800s or very early 1900s by the Bohemian glass house Kralik. This attribution has been made, following extensive research, by Bohemian glass expert Alfredo Villanueva-Collado. More information can be found on his Loetz and ...
Large German Carved Desk set with Horse

$186 USDLarge German Carved Desk set with Horse

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This spirited colt looks ready to leap off and over the inkwell before it. It is so beautifully carved that you can almost hear the whicker as it prepares for that leap. Made in the 1930s, this inkstand was hand carved in Germany. The stand appears to have been carved out of two pieces of wood that were very skillfully joined together – in fact, the only place where the seam is visible is on the base. The young horse is a separate piece fitted to the stand with pegs. It has a lighter finish than ...
Late 19th Century Cast Brass Inkwell – Persian Motif

$235 USDLate 19th Century Cast Brass Inkwell – Persian Motif

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Wow! was our response when we first saw this wonderfully detailed and exotic inkstand. The square saucer is cast (or possibly carved) with incredible detail, featuring a Persian horse and rider on each quadrant surrounded by flowers and delicate tendrils. Words can’t do the detail justice – take a look at the pictures! This inkstand was made in the late 1800s, during a time when Victorians were enamored of all things exotic, including imagery and design of the Middle East. It was made with three ...
Nippon Inkwell with Boat Design

$225 USDNippon Inkwell with Boat Design

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Two fishermen stop to check out each other’s catch, while the sun sets behind them in glorious hues of orange, yellow and purple. This inkwell is one of the beautiful and desirable Nippon inkwells made between 1889 and 1921. It bears the green M in Wreath Nippon mark, as well as a label, possibly put there by a previous owner. This inkwell has a wraparound design, featuring small boats on one side and back and a boat with windmill in the distance on the other side. A geometric design surrounds ...
Porcelain inkwell for horse lovers!

$195 USDPorcelain inkwell for horse lovers!

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This little beauty was surely designed with the horse lover in mind. Jockey hat on top and lucky horseshoes on each side – what more could you ask for? Made of highly glazed porcelain, this inkwell features a hinged lid that is designed as a jockey cap with a thin, almost translucent bill. The burnt orange of the cap is decorated with gold, as are the similar colored horse shoes on the side. Berries, leaves and vines add embellishment. The shape is also rather unique, as the sides are molded so ...
Rosenthal Inkwell and Rocking Blotter

$115 USDRosenthal Inkwell and Rocking Blotter

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
The clean lines and subtle gold trim of this set say elegance; the applied blue flowers say feminine. The perfect writing set for an early 20th century lady. The Rosenthal mark on the base of the inkstand dates it between 1907 and 1953 – we believe this was made in the 1920s or 1930s. The set is made up of an inkstand with attached inkwell and a blotter. The blotter has a porcelain ‘screw’, topped by the applied flower, which allows one to loosen the rocking portion and insert blotting paper. ...
Small enameled brass inkwell

$185 USDSmall enameled brass inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This is a beautiful and rather unusual little inkwell. We believe it is made of brass, although it could possibly be bronze. The top and sides have been tooled with great detail, and then painted or enameled. The stand holds two metal inkwells, which can be seen when the hinged lid is lifted. The metal around the inserts is also tooled and painted. We are not sure of origin, although it came most recently from Britain. It has a bit of a Middle Eastern look to it. If it is Middle Eastern in ...
Early 1900s Limoges Inkwell

$185 USDEarly 1900s Limoges Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
The soft pink background and spring like daisies tell us this inkwell was meant for a lady’s desk. The flowers and gold trim are all hand painted. The inkwell is molded with embossed curlicues on the inkwell bottom and on the lid. The lid is loose, and is held loosely in place by an insert with a raised lip. It was made by the Limoges company A. Klingenberg-Charles Dwenger. The back stamped mark on the base dates this inkwell to between about 1895 and 1910. Condition of this little beauty is ...
