Chein New Deal Bank

$125 USDChein New Deal Bank

Collectibles:Banks:Chein
1933 brought President Roosevelt’s New Deal to the American public. The New Deal provided relief to people who had suffered through the Great Depression. And while Roosevelt’s New Deal was done by 1939, its legacy lives on in a little bank that advertises, “New Deal Bank”. This bank was manufactured by Julius Chein, possibly the most famous toymaker of the time. He saw a marketing opportunity for a new bank with a great slogan. Thus, this bank was born. The bank is all American in red, white and ...
Chein Log Cabin Bank

$340 USDChein Log Cabin Bank

Collectibles:Banks:Chein
One of the most desirable banks to own is the Chein Log Cabin Bank from the 1930s. This bank portrays an image that makes many Americans uncomfortable. The banjo player and young girl are immortalized in a way that only a toy can do; the image is not subtle. Many toys of the 1930s used the same types of characterizations and were very popular. Today, this toy would be unacceptable in our culture. This difficult to find bank is in very nice condition for a toy over 70 years old. There are rub ...
Chein Busy Mike Sand Toy

$115 USDChein Busy Mike Sand Toy

Collectibles:Toys:Chein:Sand Toys
From the 1930s here is a Chein Busy Mike sand toy. This particular example has been played with (those darn kids!), and shows the sands of time. This version has the red base, which we believe to be the earlier and less common version than the yellow flagstone base. There is some corrosion and scratches from use, and the price reflects that. This is a good example of a nice toy, which provided hours of fun in the sun.
Carved Wooden Hat Inkwell

$195 USDCarved Wooden Hat Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This beautifully carved hat could be a riding hat, but could also be a hiking hat. We believe it is the latter – and was possibly sold as a souvenir of a mountain or alpine resort. It was carved carefully and with great detail, featuring a wide, thin brim, a band with a buckle in the front and a cheerful sprig of flowers in the front. The top part of the hat has been textured with tiny indentations which add interest and variety. The wood has a wonderful patina. The number 1898 is handwritten on ...
Chein 2nd National Duck Bank

$155 USDChein 2nd National Duck Bank

Collectibles:Banks:Chein
Julius Chein had a close working agreement with Walt Disney Productions from the 1930s through the 1960s. One of the most popular banks from this licensing agreement was the 2nd National Duck Bank. This bank was made in the mid-1950s, and immortalized the Disney characters we have all come to know. Just look at the characters and the quality of the lithography! There are very few toys from this period that have all of these characters on the same toy. This bank is not perfect. It does have some ...
Ceramic Curling Stone Inkwell

$142 USDCeramic Curling Stone Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Curling has been a favorite sport in Scotland since the 6th century. The game of pushing and sliding stones across the ice has since traveled to Canada and parts of the US as well. This inkwell is designed to look like the curling stone used in this sport. Made of ceramic, the surface has a transfer print that is designed to look like granite. A stripe around the middle was left unglazed and was tooled to give it a rough feel and appearance, again just like rock. The hinged lid is shaped as the ...
Art Deco Bakelite Writing Set - Green and Butterscotch

$125 USDArt Deco Bakelite Writing Set - Green and Butterscotch

Collectibles:Writing Instruments
This writing set epitomizes the sleek and elegant look of Art Deco. The bakelite is a mixture of green and butterscotch - it has the look of early slag glass, but has the smooth buttery feel of bakelite. We believe this set was never used. The pieces are smooth but don't have the scratches that old bakelite pieces often have. The seal is blank, without a monogram. The pen holder came without a nib, which also indicates it was a new set that never was dipped in ink. Possibly a gift that someone ...
Celluloid Windup Dancing Couple

$78 USDCelluloid Windup Dancing Couple

Collectibles:Toys:Japan:Celluloid
From Postwar Japan here is a Dancing Couple waltzing across time. The couple is marked “Made in Occupied Japan”. No manufacturer listed. The couple stands 5 inches tall. The colors are bright. There are a couple of problems. The windup key is showing rust, and there is a cut (less than 1/16 of an inch) on the gentleman’s left lower cheek. Some additional detailing with water could be done to bring this toy back to its original luster. One, two, three. One, two, three.
Carved German Farm Dog Inkstand

$215 USDCarved German Farm Dog Inkstand

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
Who wouldn’t want this loyal, intent dog guarding his inkwell? This great inkstand dates to probably the early 1930s and comes from Germany. The base is a slab of wood, with bark still intact around the edge. The dog is beautifully carved, with a great expression and a very realistic pose. He has wonderful glass eyes. This looks like a souvenir piece, as there is a place name on the base, but we haven’t been able to figure out what it says. Condition of this inkstand is excellent, except for the ...
Celluloid Dime New Born Baby Bank

$110 USDCelluloid Dime New Born Baby Bank

Collectibles:Banks:Celluloid
Here is a great celluloid bank that celebrates saving for a new born baby. Hey, start that college fund early and invest in a bank that will gain in value as you put dimes in it! This bank is in very good condition with just a little discoloration to the left of the stork. The Stronghart Company of Chicago trademark is shown on the front. The reverse is in fine condition and says that one of these banks would be given with every new born baby. Almost a good reason to have a few babies!
Brass inkstand with faceted cut glass inkwell

$95 USDBrass inkstand with faceted cut glass inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This is a simple yet very elegant inkstand from the end of the 1800s or possibly early 1900s. It is made of heavy brass, shaped perfectly to catch those ink spills. The glass inkwell is cut into a wonderful faceted pattern. It has a very pale pink tone to it, which is difficult to see in the photos. The lid has a great pointed finial, which crowns the whole stand very nicely. Measurements are about 7” in diameter, and about 4 1/2" tall to the top of the finial. Condition is very good. There is ...
Chinese Metal Inkwell with Dragons

$80 USDChinese Metal Inkwell with Dragons

Collectibles:Writing Instruments
Good luck surely flowed from the wonderful Chinese dragons punched or stamped onto the sides of this fun inkwell. The lid also features two dragons, while the knob is decorated with Oriental symbols. The metal has a look of copper, although it is a bit yellower than some. There are a few spots that appear silver; it is possible that the base metal of this inkwell is some kind of white metal, with a copper coat. On the other hand, the thin sheet of metal that makes the lid appears to be the same ...
Chein Medium Size Child’s Safe Bank

$85 USDChein Medium Size Child’s Safe Bank

Collectibles:Banks:Chein
Beginning in the early 1900s, J. Chein & Company produced many different banks for children. One of those was the Child Safe Bank. The example listed here is the medium size bank. It dates as early as 1910 to about 1921 and retailed for 10 cents. The bank is made of steel with red enameled paint on the top, bottom and sides; orange on the door. Very few of these have survived kid burglars without dings, dents, scrapes and prying at the door. This one isn’t any different. But it remains a nice ...
Ceramic Hand Painted Inkwell with Birds

$85 USDCeramic Hand Painted Inkwell with Birds

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This fun ceramic inkwell makes us think of spring, with its hand painted swallows and blossoming stems. The colors are pink and blue with dark red silhouetted birds and plants. It is a bit larger than many of these ceramic inkwells at just over 2” square and about 3 1/2" tall. This inkwell is typical Victorian, and was made in the late 1900s. It is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or scratches. There is a bit of paint loss on the blue stripe running down the front, which may have ...
SALE Novelty traveling inkwell – violin case!

$270 USD SaleSALE Novelty traveling inkwell – violin case!

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
These figural traveling inkwells are hard to find – especially in this condition. This one is in the shape of a violin case, complete with a little handle. Covered in leather, or possibly sharkskin dyed black, this is a great piece from a by-gone age. A button on the front pushes to open the violin case lid. The ink bottle has a spring loaded lid which works perfectly. A pen wipe is also included. This inkwell has been used; the bottle is heavily ink stained and there are tiny specks of ...
Ceramic Inkwell with Hand Painted Flowers

$65 USDCeramic Inkwell with Hand Painted Flowers

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This inkwell features an unusual scalloped shape, and bright, cheerful flowers on both the base and lid. It was probably meant for a lady’s desk, and was sure to brighten even the most melancholy day. It has a scalloped shape with six rounded “points” – on both the base and the lid. The flowers are hand painted in pink, purple, blue and red. It measures 2 1/2" in diameter (from point to point) and about 2 1/4" tall. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks or scratches in the ceramic. All ...
Belgian Tin Advertising Yo-Yo – Cichorei de Beukelaar

$57 USDBelgian Tin Advertising Yo-Yo – Cichorei de Beukelaar

Collectibles:Toys:Yo-yos:Tin Advertising
This advertising yo-yo has a wonderful graphic of a woman in traditional headdress hoisting a cup of hot… chicory drink! Chicory root has been used for years, particularly in Europe, as a cheap substitute for coffee. Its use was especially prevalent during war when coffee was scarce, which leads us to believe that this yo-yo dates to either before or shortly after World War II. The de Beukelaar Chicory company was in business during that time. Both sides of the yo-yo show the same picture. This ...
Celluloid Tape Measure – Baseball player!

$165 USDCelluloid Tape Measure – Baseball player!

Collectibles:Sewing Items:Tape Measure:We Are Happy To Gift Wrap - Just Ask
“Take me out to ball game…” and watch this little player swing his bat! He is ready to go, his eyes watching intently, his lips pursed in an almost smile… oh yes, he is ready to swing and run! This little celluloid novelty tape measure was made in Japan in the early part of the 20th century. He is in excellent condition. There is just a little paint loss right where the tape measure ring hits the edge. A sticker on his back reads “Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin,” indicating that this was likely a ...

Collectibles:Sewing Items:Tape Measure
We offer another cute Japanese made celluloid tape measure from sometime in the first half of the last century. Condition is very good. The colors are bright, with no fading or chipping. ...
Duncan Incredible Hulk Yo-Yo MIB

$25 USDDuncan Incredible Hulk Yo-Yo MIB

Collectibles:Toys:Yo-yos
For that Incredible Hulk in your life, here is a mint in box Duncan Yo-Yo from 1978. It could even be you, when you look in the mirror! Mr. Hulk was captured in three different yo-yo versions. This one is the non-flicker version with the large Hulk face and double black border around “HULK”. Of the three types, this is the most difficult to find. The yo-yo comes in the original store-hanging display case, which is labeled Duncan. While there are wear scratches on the case, the yo-yo is mint. It ...
British Folk Art Carved Inkwell – Duck with Bakelite Beak

$125 USDBritish Folk Art Carved Inkwell – Duck with Bakelite Beak

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
This Art Deco duck may have added a bit of whimsy to a child’s desk in the 1920s. The duck is carved to look like it is standing at rest, with its beak resting on its beak. Nicely carved and stained, it has a realistic look to it, even though the lines are clean and stylized. The eyes are glass and the beak is Bakelite. The duck is attached to a barrel or pot shaped inkwell. The hinged lid opens to reveal a ceramic insert. Condition is very good. The wood and Bakelite have a nice patina. The ...
Cast metal horse head inkwell – Made in Japan

$150 USDCast metal horse head inkwell – Made in Japan

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
What a fun inkwell for the horse lover! This cast metal inkwell features a lifelike horse’s head set against a horseshoe. The horse is painted a brownish gray (with some silver metal showing through at the nose and eye). The bridle and horseshoe are accented in red. The horse’s head is wonderful – showing some veining, flaring nostrils and ears perked up, waiting for the command to be given: Giddiup!! The face can be lifted (by the ear) to reveal two milk glass inserts. The base is clearly ...
Celluloid sailing ship tape measure – Japanese

$115 USDCelluloid sailing ship tape measure – Japanese

Collectibles:Sewing Items:Tape Measure
This little sailing ship, or schooner, looks ready to sail the high seas. The sails are all up and billowing in the wind, the flags are flying and we can imagine the tiny people scurrying around on deck. Condition of this little celluloid tape measure is excellent. There are no scratches, cracks or chips. Paint is shiny and all there. The tape measure pulls out and retracts with strength, but it is a little frayed at the end. The metal puller is still intact at the end. This tape measure is not ...
Czechoslovakian Rainbow Cut Glass Lay Down Perfume

$315 USDCzechoslovakian Rainbow Cut Glass Lay Down Perfume

Collectibles:Vanity Items
This is one lay down perfume that you will not see often, and one that you won't let lie. Made in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s or 30s, it is a lovely piece of hand cut glass. But that’s not what makes this perfume special. It is flashed on the inside in rainbow colors of cranberry, yellow and blue. When you look through the glass and turn it around, the colors blend to make green, purple, orange and pink so you feel like you are really watching a rainbow move in your hand. It’s mesmerizing, ...
Clear Early American Pattern Glass Hobnail Inkwell

$95 USDClear Early American Pattern Glass Hobnail Inkwell

Collectibles:Writing Instruments:Inkwells
While the hobnail pattern is a fairly common one in Early American Pattern Glass items, inkwells in this pattern are not so often found. This one is a nice example of this fun and eye catching pattern. What we especially like about this piece is the different sized hobnails, which create great optical effects. The top of the inkwell has very small hobnails, while the sides are larger. The loose lid has a ring of large hobnails around the outside, then medium sized rings and one larger hobnail in ...

The colors are bright and shiny – there are no cracks or even dimples in the celluloid. The tape measure itself looks as though it has rarely been pulled out as there is no fraying at all. The little metal ring at the end is still intact, and “JAPAN” and “SKK” in a diamond are printed on the end. The tape retracts beautifully. ...

This cute perfume was made in Czechoslovakia probably in the 1930s. It has an elegant shape, with the sides pinched in slightly towards the base. A large facetted amber crystal decorates the front and top of the cap, while four smaller crystals are placed in front and on the sides. White enameled flowers and a wonderful filigree case complete this little work of art. Each enameled flower has a tiny facetted stone in the middle – we believe it is marcasite, but it could possibly be black glass. ...

This unusual and very decorative silver plate inkstand has a story – one that we have not yet been able to learn much about… yet. Engraved in the front are the words: IN MEMORIUM FEBRUARY 20TH 1883. We wonder… who died? And to whom was the inkstand given? It is a lovely piece of silver and pottery. The stand features detailed open molded work and interesting cut work around the outside.
