Auguste Hesse (Nicolas) was born in Paris in 1795 and died there in 1869. He was a painter and lithographer. Initially studying under his brother, the painter Henri-Joseph Hesse (1781-1849), Auguste Hesse later studied under Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835) who in turn trained with his father and later Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825). Auguste Hesse won the Prix de Rome in 1818. Although besieged with ill health, Hesse painted a number of works based on classical and mythological subjects while in Italy; he exhibited at the Salon in 1814 for the first time. Afterward, Auguste Hesse worked for King Louis-Philippe in 1846, decorating his chateau at Corbeil in Brittany and continued to teach students of the fine arts. Leon Cogniet was born in Paris in 1794 and entered the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris where he studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guerin (1774-1833) at the same time as Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) and Theodore Gericault (1791-1824). Leon Cogniet was a resident at the Villa Medici in Rome during the years 1817 through 1822. A romantic painter, Cogniet's main subjects were history and portraits. In 1817 he won the Prix de Rome where he died in 1880. His work as seen in "The Egyptian Expedition Under Command of Bonaparte", circa1835 was influential in later works of Eugene Fines. Spanning the years of 1859 until 1880, many Salon exhibitions included Eugene Fines' countryside scenes, increasing his popularity and reputation while maintaining his artistic talent. Generally, Fines found great inspiration in "la Bretagne", a northern province of France. The area known for its famous walled city, Saint-Malo, also contains inhabitants and native sights in Brest, Nantes, Redon and Vannes. This area provided heavily studied compositions for the artist. Eugene Fines was also known for his pseudohistoric pieces.
"Interior with Mother and Child in Crib" is a tender moment shared with a mother and child. Beautifully rendered in detailed brushstroke, Fines has mastered complexion and skin tone for each of the figures in the canvas.
Also included, Fines has skillfully added color in costume for the two figures. The mother is plainly but handsomely attired in provincial costume while the child sleeps peacefully wrapped in home-spun cotton and sashed waist.
The Spartan-like interior is reminiscent of French country houses of the time period. Included in the sparse interior, Fines has added a simple light source through the high window above the two figures. The windows are unclosed, showing an openness in the canvas and inviting the viewer into the peaceful tranquility of the composition.
The painting is in its original, hand-carved and gilded frame. Framed size is 33 1/2 x 29 framed, Canvas Alone is 24 1/4 X 20 inches, Serious Inquiries are Welcome!
