This Lovely Oil on Panel is in Excellent Condition, Early 1900's. Albert Stolz was born on November 19, 1875 in Botzen, Austria. Stolz attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Art from 1899-1901, where he was the student of artist Alois Delug. In 1903, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome for his abilities as an artist.
Stolz became well known for his decorative panels and was often commissioned by churches and other public entities to paint these compositions. Stolz painted according to a style led by nineteenth century masters Messonier in France and Menzel in Germany, who sought to emulate the elegant lavishness of the eighteenth century. Bourgeois Europeans looked back to this former period with nostalgia, regarding it as a genteel age lost to the cold industrialism and changing moral standards of the late nineteenth century when culture, propriety, and refinement came naturally and effortlessly. Paintings such as "Courting Couple" gave Stolz and his fellow artists the opportunity to relish in the opulence of the eighteenth century. The middle classes of the nineteenth century desired paintings which portray elegant people in luxurious surroundings. In this work, Stolz paints his subjects in an eighteenth century in a rococo setting. The couple, dressed lavishly in eighteenth century costume, exchanges flirtatious dialog as the young man extends a rose to the lady. Measuring framed 20" T x 16" W, painting 12.5" T x 8" W.
