This Majestic Belgian Bronze and Black Marble Clock with Brocot Escapementis in Excellent Overall Working Condition,c1870.
Featuring a roman numeral face set into a marble and ormolu base flanked by large volutes headed by espagnolettes. The Belgian clock case surmounted by the bust of Apollo with ivy twined hair and stamped "Cie Anonyme des Bronzes Bruxelles." The serial number 1103 is noted on the clock works and the pendulum length is 72. The clock works are stamped “Brocot Bte Sgd,” indicating they were made by Achille Brocot (1817-1878). Brocot was mathematician and clock maker, the eldest son of L.G.Brocot. In 1856 he was treasurer to La Societe des Horlogers in Paris, and awarded a First Class medal at the 1855 Paris Exhibition. His trademark was advertised in the 1864 Almanach Artistique as an AB centered in a star. Brocot is the inventor of the pin pallet escapement designed for use with pendulum clocks. Achille also invented the perpetual calendar. In 1862 he published a 97 page article devoted to what is now known as the Stern-Brocot tree.
