Alright, you've probably figured out by now that I have a "thing" for nappys... because I do! This is an especially nice piece from the American Brilliant Period of cut glass making (1875-1915). This piece was made toward the latter part of the ABP. The reason we know this is because toward the end of the American Brilliant Period, owners of the big glass houses found that they could save on labor costs by eliminating the polisher, which was ultimately the last step in finishing a piece. At this time, they discovered that a piece could be dipped briefly in an acid wash, achieving almost the same result as if it had been polished. However, the difference (although subtle) is that the clarity was not quite as clear as it had been when actually polished. It appears a bit more "wavy" (for lack of a better word) than pieces that had previously been hand polished. Still, these pieces are quite lovely & representative of a time in glass making history which can never be repeated.
This nappy is in VERY NICE CONDITION, meaning that although not perfect, it has a minimal amount of damage. We have located one flat, vertical slice of a chip to one of the teeth on the sawtooth rim which is only noticeable upon close scrutiny, as well as 4-5 pin-head size fleabites scattered about the rim. These are more easily felt than seen & certainly don't interfere w/ the beauty of the piece. Otherwise, there are no other signs of damage, no cloudiness, no cracks, and no repairs.
It measures 6" in diameter, 7-1/2" when including handle, and 1-1/2" in depth.
