This is a charming Early American Pressed (or Pattern) Glass double-handled open sugar. It features a scalloped rim that once had gold, but is now mostly gone & a 40 point starburst on the base. The pattern consists of what resembles shooting comets & inverted large & small thumbprints that have amethyst flashing, estimated to be circa 1913. It's a very ornate & attractive pattern, identified in Edwards & Carwile's Standard Encyclopedia of Pressed Glass II as being by U. S. Glass in their "Blazing Cornucopia" pattern also known as "Paisley" or "Golden Jewel". In the book this pattern is represented on Page 37. It is in EXCELLENT CONDITION, meaning that there are no nicks, chips, fleabites, cracks, cloudiness, or repairs. The only problem appears to be wear to the gold on the scalloped rim & very slight fading to the amethyst flashing. It is entirely possible that this piece was once part of a *table set*.
It measures 3-7/8" in height, 3-1/2" diameter @ the top, 3-5/8" diameter @ the base, and 5-1/2" from the outside of one handle to the other. I might also add that there are some bubbles & straw marks scattered about, as well as some wear marks to the base from normal use, which are all consistent of a piece this age.
