This is a fabulous antique Victorian Era silver plated tureen (or toureen) w/ ornate feet of fleur-de-lis, signed Wm. Briggs & Co. SHEFFIELD. William Briggs & Co. were in business from 1875 to 1922. This set is estimated to be from the early 1900's, but it's also possible that it was made earlier. The top is skillfully adorned with a lovely pattern of what appears to be "Baby's Breath", as well as a crest of some sort just above the shell handle with which you turn the cover. Inside, there are 2 more pieces including a solid silver tray & a reticulated tray that fits inside the solid one. This wonderful piece was designed so that it could be used for keeping meats warmed during dining by filling the inner tray w/ scalding hot water. Or, when the 2 inner pieces were removed, it was further used as a stew or soup toureen. The detail is charming & it is in EXCELLENT CONDITION, meaning that all parts are secure & in quite satisfactory condition. There is very little wear present, but there is some although nothing that cannot be buffed out by the proper people. There seems to be no damage to any of the silver plating and there is none missing.

This wonderful piece is from the estate of a rather colorful Amarillo rancher & oil man, now owned by his Grandson. This will arrive with provenance from the current owner.

The tureen measures 14" in length from the outside of one handle to the other (10-1/2" excluding handles), 8-1/2" in width & stands 8-1/2" tall. What a definitive addition this outstanding piece would make to a higher end silver/silver plate collection.
