This wonderful antique sterling chamberstick is circa 1810 according to its marks and what a treat it is to find one with its original snuffer. The marks are the same on both pieces, confirming that this is the original snuffer The mark on the far left side is ignored since it was not only stamped over by another company, but someone tried to scratch it out as well. Fortunately, it means nothing. The second mark is the Lion Passant (meaning sterling) and the 3rd mark is the duty mark with George III's (head) mark that duty had been paid. The hand mark @ the bottom reveals that this piece was from the firm of Smith, Tate, Nicholson & Hoult of Sheffield. There is also a Capital C with a crown above it which means it was made in Sheffield in 1810. So, we know this lovely chamberstick with original snuffer is from 1810 Sheffield, England, by the silver firm of Smith, Tate, Nicholson & Hoult. Further design on both pieces suggest that this was perhaps made for a sailing ship or seaman's home. It is in nearly pristine condition and only shows an appropriate amount of surface wear to the base to reflect the era during which this piece was made & used.
It measures 6-1/4" in diameter and approximately 3-1/2" in height.
