You're buying the pair of wonderful guache & ink portraits of Andreas Hansen & Wife, in the original ebony frames, as far as we can tell. The dates and old ID writing on back give us a bit of biographical data on this couple, whose portraits in a primitive but adept style are presented here. Lots of photos to help you see these, though they're much more interesting and fine in person. The outer mat might have been added later on, and Mrs. Hansen's portrait has slipped a little in the frame. The pair are wonderful to hang and accent your home, collection, or to give you instant ancestors. Earlier than 1837, which is the death date for the one who lived longest (Mrs. Hansen). No photographs so early (daguerreotypes not in practice until 1839) so hand painted portraits were the only way to preserve a likeness. Since these look to us to be of fairly young Mr. and Mrs., we think they're probably from 1810-1820. What a wonderful pair! Works of art in miniature, and beautifully done!
