"The best antiques inventory online" - YOU said it, and often. Thanks! We appreciate you all! !
Not only is this a superb old micromosaic of high appeal (birds and chariot), and in fine condition, it's a massive thing. The 10K brooch is over 30 grams and tests at 10K gold. The dedication on back dates the gifting of it to 1847, so we know it's earlier than that. The interior back has a locket covered by glass and into which once might have been placed the locks of hair of this couple. I like to think this was a wedding gift 'to his wife' as noted on back, and that the couple did the 3 or 6 month honeymoon Grand Tour which this brooch surely celebrates. Certainly it was a treasured heirloom, as it is in finest condition throughout, and is now one to be treasured for generations within your own family. Beautiful goldsmith work on this one and we think that is the goldsmith's signature inside the hinged gold back (see in our images). Quite a treasure, it's got a hook for your pocket watch, or whatever bauble you might wish to drop from it as a dangle (maybe a mabe pearl or something lovely?). Stunning!
Very good to excellent condition throughout. The very tiniest nip on beveled rim of the onyx basin at about 3-4 o'clock position, and perhaps a finest hairline near there, neither of which shows to the naked eye or diminishes either value or appeal of this magnificent brooch. A treasure! It's not original to the box in which it is shown, but we will include that antique box to protect and preserve it.
