"The best antique inventory online" - YOU said it, and often. Thanks! We try!
The original after which this stunning miniature is painted is by famed French artist, Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805), and is entitled, 'The Broken Jug'. What we can't see in our miniature of this painting is that she carries, quite literally, a broken jug hanging from her arm at about the 7 o'clock position. In the original, which we have added in miniature for reference, you see the jug adn the remainder of the painting from which this miniature is painted. The meaning of this painting has to do with the loss of the girl's chastity and virginity. It was a theme Greuze worked with often in his fine paintings, along with non-themed portraits and paintings of the finest quality. But this is a theme painting that is often copied. Charming in the depiction we have here in miniature. A splendid painting for your own walls or mine, your musuem quality collection of miniature painting, or mine - but we offer it proudly here, in its original 19th century dore bronze frame. A nice larger sized 'miniature', beautifully accomplished and in fine condition. If I am not mistaken, the original painting remains today on display in the Louvre.
Very good to excellent, as shown, the ivory wafer is remarkably fine, has a tiny bit of rub to the far left side (see the scan of this ivory) - nothing further. Original cover glass has protected it very well, and remains in the beautiful old dore bronze frame. Superb!
