A stunning mourning brooch, midnight cobalt
blue enamel on 12K gold, set with seed pearls
and a single diamond at center of the floral
or constellation group. Weighs 21.35 grams, but that includes the cover glass on back which would be minimal in the total weight. This is a large and substantial bit of early Victorian jewelry!
“In memory of Dixon Broadbent, died June 12th
1845, aged 16 yrs
The enamel on this one is perfect - not a chip or crack to be found. The seed pearls are all in place and I see nothing to hint at them not being the old originals. The small diamond has been tested and is indeed a diamond. The quality is superior on this beautiful piece, and I'm certain it must have been a standout in its day, as well. Larger than most of these, it's weight is substantial. And yes, we do test the gold to be certain we are accurate. A superb 1840s treasure, woven hair still intact under the glass covering, as well.
