Antique 14K - 15K Gold Victorian Kilt Pin, Brooch Coral Rose

Our reference books note that this style of brooch was actually a kilt pin; that they're Scottish in origin, and are Victorian to Edwardian in era. And the goldsmith's work on this one is superb - a real beauty whether you use it as a brooch or attach it to a chain or to your pearls as a lavalier. Victorian gold, almost always 15K in items such as this, though often we see 9K or 10K as well. The addition of the rose carved in fine old coral is an interesting touch, since we often see these old ones with just a coral branch in the eternal knot. This coral is still found in abundance in the Mediterranean sea, and ancient Greek and Roman excavations have turned up many examples of it used in jewelry from that time. It was then, as it is now, a talisman to ward off evil and harm. Greek lore was that the coral is the drops of blood that flowed from the severed head of Medusa, when the empress of all really really bad hair days was slain by Perseus. And through to today, it is considered a protective talisman against harm or danger, particularly as an item to protect one's young or children. So, beautifully preserved, this 'something old' might well be the perfect gift for your daughter or granddaughter as a wedding or even a graduation gift. Very good to excellent condition, this one suffers no damage we can find. A superb example of hand repousse in fine old gold. The gold is hollow, but substantial. Elegant as can be!
