Antique French Frame, Portrait Miniature on Ivory Wafer
Fine Art : Paintings : Miniature Paintings, Grand Tour
Great old French frame, and inside is a lovely young woman, subject of this miniature painting, a stunning example of the popular genre, pre-photography which makes this one likely pre-1839, when the only way to preserve a likeness was by hiring an artist, or miniaturist. This one is signed by the artist, - a very adept artist, certainly, though I can't read the signature (shown in images for your review). You know, In his book, "The Judgment of Paris", Ross King reminds us that the French Impressionists whose work now command millions of dollars, worked as tourist's portraitists about this time just to feed themselves and keep paints and supplies in stock. Wouldn't it be amazing to learn that some portrait in your collection could be traced to Manet, a young Gaughan, Monet or Degas? Certainly a lot of the ones that have passed through our shop over time have been deserving museum quality pieces. One wonders!
Very good to excellent condition, there isn't a single flaw to note in the painting or ivory on which it is painted. Frame needs the hanging loop added, or else she will need a small easel to display. Original slightly convex and polished cover glass is also in place and excellent. We'll be offering a number of fine portrait miniatures, listing today. Look for others - collect a Master!
