SOLD Antique French Miniature Portrait Ivory, Cardinal Richelieu
For all the times we mention Cardinal Richelieu as pertains to his old palace, later converted to the most elegant of shopping and entertainment centers in the late 1700s (The Palais Royal), it's about time we offered up the gent, himself. Here is a late 1800s portrait in miniature of the Cardinal who, as Prime Minister, literally ruled France, 1585 - 1642. Truly, just about all you need know of him is a famous quote, "If you give me six lines written by the most honest man, I will find something in them to hang him." —Cardinal Richelieu. His 'ministry' over France was marked by strict devotion to the Roman Catholic Church, but he also felt the church should be more political. Known as a brilliant man and scholar, he also embraced the arts and was instrumental in the rebuilding of the Sorbonne, established the French Academy, as well as oversaw the expansion of France's colonization in the Caribbean and in Africa. Truly a brilliant (if fierce) man, he remains a prime figure in French history. Learn more online or in any bookstore. And own your own miniature rendition of this magnificent leader.
Very good condition, it's a late 1800s to earliest 1900s souvenir painting in miniature made for the Grand Tour trades. On ivory, it is aptly done, well presented in a wood frame.
