19th Century Miniature Painting/Portrait on Ivory, Tortoise Shell Frame - Nudes - VERY 'Fragonard or Boucher'
Fine Art : Paintings : Miniature Paintings, Grand Tour
This is the second of two superb antique miniature paintings we're listing today, from a matching group of famous paintings brought to life in miniature by the same very talented miniaturist who has signed each. The subject is from the French Romantic period of painting, and this one is very 'Fragonard' or 'Boucher' in subject, treatment and feel, but I'm not certain which artist did the original work and am also unable to put a title to it. I'll have to do more research in my Art History reference books. (If you know it, please email and save me some time - thanks!). Amazing detail for a painting so tiny, and based on the other one, a Boucher 'Diana at the Bath', a very close to original integrity rendition of the larger original painting. Not to put too fine a point on it, but with a loupe I was surprised to see that the man's legs and shoulder/arms actually do appear to have masculine covering of fine hair. WOW! Not only is this a fantastic tiny painting, on pristine ivory wafer, it presents all the more beautifully in the original tortoise shell frame accented by bronze ormolu mat, and still with the original slightly beveled tiny polished cover glass. All original, all in pristine condition, with a nod to a tiny bug nibble or two on the old tortoise shell, which is to be expected. Mid-1800s, likely a Grand Tour souvenir purchased in the shops of the Palais Royal, just aside the Louvre. What a GEM for any fine museum quality miniatures collection!
Very good to excellent, measurements in photos.
