This walnut Victorian Firescreen is in the Eastlake style. The needleworked center panel consists of a flying angel holding garlands of flowers with a child riding on her back. The background and hair are done in needlepoint. The beautifully executed hands, legs and faces are done petit pointe. All the clothing and flowers were executed using tiny sewn glass beads. The work is exquisite. The needlework is in remarkable original condition. The beading and petit point are perfect. There is a small area above the angel's head where the needlepoint appears to have been stressed and slightly pushed in. There is no loss in this area. The indent may be able to be fixed by apply steam to the area. In the far left lower corner is a small ¼" round area of thread loss. You have to look closely to find it. The screen has its original silk fabric backing, which has a few tears - all to be expected. The screen is designed to pivot to deflect the heat of the fire. The walnut frame is in excellent condition having no breaks or repairs. The finish appears original and is in excellent condition. Its amazing this delicate piece has survived and is in such remarkable condition. 41.5"h X 23.5"w X 13"d, Condition: Very Good-Excellent, Circa: 1880's.
