Here is an early Victorian secretary in the style of J. & J. Meeks, prominent cabinet makers in NYC. The fruit carved crest rests atop an extremely bold cornice. The mirrored doors are unusual, yet original to the piece. The shapely mirrors are accented with additional carvings at the top and bottom. Inside the doors are 2 adjustable shelves. The backs of the mirrors are covered in pleated silk, another unique, but original treatment. Below the top doors, the paneled writing surface drops down to reveal a satinwood interior with cubbies and 7 finely dovetailed drawers. The base steps out having 2 drawers and three doors below. All the drawers and doors are framed with delicate applied carvings. Notice the unusual concave central door. Inside is a partition to store ledgers or large journals. Each side door has a shelf. Notice the canted sides on the base and sides with additional applied carvings. One drawer is missing a lock. All the others have their original lock with keys. There is dramatic flamed mahogany graining on all the bottom drawers and doors, and on the desk lid as well. The finish appears original and is in very good to excellent condition. Three of the original wooden key escutcheons show wear. This secretary is of exceptional quality and would easily become the focus of any room or collection. Condition-Very Good, Circa-1850's, 96.5"h X 52"w X 23.5"d
